Inside the Venue Upgrades Readying Boulder Theaters for Sundance 2027

Published October 2026

October 14, 2026 — A $16 million low-cost loan secured through the Colorado Educational and Cultural Facilities Authority is helping finance audio/visual and accessibility improvements at a number of Boulder theaters in advance of the 2027 Sundance Film Festival, according to KUNC. Funding streams vary by venue — Chautauqua Auditorium, for instance, has raised its own funds through separate private donations and CECFA bonds — so no single financing mechanism covers all ten venues uniformly.

What's Being Upgraded

The bulk of the work is concentrated on CU Boulder's campus. According to CU Boulder Today, Macky Auditorium and Roe Green Theatre are undergoing major cinema buildouts — including a Dolby Atmos sound system, new screens, projection hush boxes, and seat removal and replacement. (Roe Green Theatre had already undergone a significant renovation in 2023, improving acoustics, stage lighting, speaker placement, and air-handling before Sundance entered the picture.) Muenzinger Auditorium is also receiving sound and projection improvements, along with accessibility enhancements.

Sundance has published a venue overview blog post outlining which campus spaces will host screenings and events — worth bookmarking as the festival gets closer.

Note: Specific seat configurations, technical specs, and per-venue screening schedules for 2027 have not yet been announced by Sundance.

Why It Matters for Festivalgoers

The January 2027 festival window is still a few months out. Check the official Sundance site for the current status of ticket and pass details and pricing before making plans, and check back here as more venue information becomes available.
